 Q. How do I enroll my dog in Canine Country Days?
A. Please call 212.531.DOGS (3647) or email us (info@blueskydogsny.com) and we'll arrange a time to stop by to meet with you and your dog. At that meeting, we'll assess your dog's character and temperament, walk through and complete paperwork, and schedule your dog's first Canine Country Day. If your canine companion is friendly, over four months old, has proof of all required vaccinations and identification, and has a harness, she or he can get started as soon as possible. Q. How does Blue Sky Dogs transport dogs and what areas do we visit? A. We transport dogs for Canine Country Days in either our Jeep Grand Cherokee or a minivan. Dogs will be allowed to travel in the manner they are accumstomed to. If a crate is required, please let us know as we will need to insure proper fit in our vehicle. Blue Sky Dogs visits parks, wilderness areas and beaches in New York and New Jersey. We carefully screen each location prior to our visit and we are aware of the rules and regulations of each park. Q. How many dogs are taken on each trip and how are decisions made about which dogs to take together? A. Approximately six to eight dogs are taken on each trip. The number of dogs scheduled depends on the grouping of dogs we have for that day - size, activity level, age and temperament are all taken into consideration. As we pre-screen each dog during enrollment, we use that information to determine which dogs will travel and play best together. If you are aware of any aggression issues your has dog toward other dogs, please let us know. Q. Are all sizes of dogs welcome? How about puppies and older dogs? A. All sizes of dogs are most definitely welcome. In developing groups for trips, we do take size into consideration as indicated above. Small dogs enjoy the outdoors as much as big dogs! Please do let us know if your dog has issues with smaller or larger dogs. Puppies over four months of age and with all required shots are welcome keeping in mind that they will not be exercised aggressively to safeguard their growing bones. Older dogs without serious hip or joint problems are welcome. Please let us know if you have a dog with these problems as we can arrange for customized swim trips or very easy outings. Q. How long is each outing? A. Between pick-up, drop-off, activity time, and travel time, each outing is approximately eight hours of non-stop fun! Q. Are dogs given off-leash freedom? A. Whether a dog is given off-leash privileges depends on several important factors. First, the owner must give permission for the dog to be off-leash and verification that the dog behaves appropriately off-leash. Second, all dogs new to Blue Sky Dogs will be kept on-leash for approximately the first two sessions unless we have prior knowledge of your dog. Finally, some parks and wilderness areas require dogs to be on-leash in specific areas. We abide by these rules. Q. Where do I purchase a harness for my dog? A. Blue Sky Dogs sells excellent harnesses made By Ruff Wear. We believe these harnesses are the safest and best-fitting available for dogs. Please let us know of your interest in purchasing a harness. We will assist you in measuring your dog to insure the appropriate fit, and have the harness for you as soon as possible! Q. My dog has some mild behavior problems with other dogs. Can she/he still participate? A. Each dog is assessed individually on behavior. If a dog has never bitten another dog, but exhibits some aggressiveness around specific dogs, we will match that dog up with other dogs she or he is compatible with. If a dog is not well socialized and exhibits aggressive behavior, she or he will not be accepted for Blue Sky Dogs services. Customized sessions may be possible at an additional fee and dependent upon the nature of the dog's aggressiveness. Q. Do dogs need to be spayed or neutered? A. All female dogs must be spayed by six months of age. All male dogs must be neutered by eight months of age. Customized sessions may be possible for dogs not spayed or neutered.
